Pueblo tribe diet
During the Pueblo I period, people relied more and more on farming to feed a growing population. Another favorite Pueblo food today is chile peppers. At Hopi, Pueblo people make piki (pronounced PEE-kee) bread out of blue corn. The thin batter is spread on a hot stone, and the resulting bread is paper thin and crispy. Pueblo Indians in the twenty-first century still grow corn, beans, and squash. In addition to being part of the regular diet, these foods are also used in ceremonies. But most of their meat now comes from domesticated animals, such as chickens and cows. In years when they had a good harvest, they could dry and store extra food for years when the harvest was poor.

Piki bread is made of very finely ground cornmeal mixed with ash and water. Archaeologists have found evidence that people hunted so many animals and gathered so many plants that these wild resources became scarce. Ears of corn are roasted after the fall harvest. People during the Pueblo I period continued to hunt wild animals and gather wild plants. Corn and beans were the most important foods during the Pueblo I period. Corn is especially important in Pueblo spiritual life and ceremonies. The peppers are dried, strung, and then used to spice up other foods.
